Royal Botanical Gardens in Melbourne

Let’s discover together the beauty of this inner-city oasis and admire the stunning living collections at Royal Botanical Gardens in Melbourne CBD.

Melbourne Gardens was founded in 1846 when the land was reserved on the south side of the Yarra River for a new botanic garden. It extends across 38 hectares (94 acres) that slope to the river with trees, garden beds, lakes, and lawns. It displays almost 50,000 individual plants representing 8,500 different species. These are displayed in 30 living plant collections.

We start our walk from Princes Lawn close to the Rose Pavilion and walk towards the Australian Forest Walk trail. We are climbing up Guilfoyle’s Volcano which is a spectacular hill covered with different colourful species. The trail leads us to the Arid Garden where we can find a wide range of unique succulents and cacti.

Magnificent views of the city can be found all throughout the gardens. These gardens provide plenty of peaceful spots to stop for a picnic or to sit on a bench and read a book.
